| How to Assess the Onboard Power Demand |
| Date:2008-9-24 9:36:43 |
|
It is necessary to seriously analyse the power demand for a practical onboard electronic system. It's not only to concern about the input voltage, output voltage and current, but also carefully consider the total power consumption, the achieved efficiency of onboard power supply, the response capability for onboard power supply to the changes in the load transient, the tolerance range of key device to power supply fluctuations, as well as the appropriate onboard power supply ripple, heat and so on. Power and efficiency are closely related, with high-efficiency, power consumption load in the same total power consumption is small, which would be very beneficial to the power budget of whole system; as compared with LDO and onboard switching power supply, the efficiency of latter is higher. At the same time, to assess the efficiency is not just observe the efficiency of onboard power supply circuit under the full load, but also concern about the light load. As for the load transient response capability, there are strict requirements for a number of high-performance CPU applications; as when CPU suddenly runs heavy tasks, the start of the current need is great, if the response speed of onboard power supply circuit is slow, the voltage drops too low, resulting in CPU running error. In general, the required actual power value is 5% of the nominal value, so to calculate the allowed power supply ripple, of course, you have to set aside the margin. For those high-current power and LDO, heat is more important, which also can be calculated whether appropriate or not through the assessment. |
